Having completed the Diploma in Marine Surveying in May 2007 I have no hesitation in recommending this Diploma as an excellent course for members of all Coast Guards. Many of our Managers have completed the course and an increasing number of our operations staff are studying for it.
The course is very comprehensive covering all aspects of shipping from ship design, cargoes, surveys, law, insurance and engines to writing reports and even gives an appreciation of budgeting for a surveyor.
It is a challenge but you get drawn into the work and are rewarded by the feedback from the monthly modules. You can choose a specialist subject that interests you or may help in career development.
Try and attend the seminars as these give you an opportunity to meet the people who write the modules. It is worth listening to their lectures and there is plenty of time to question them and have a chat over coffee. It is also an opportunity to meet fellow students from within the shipping industry. The lecturers at the seminars are not only those who write the modules but they are also ultimately oversee the marking of your papers.

This is a good course covering the entire job description of a superintendent, and has a lot of insight and advice about the industry, from the daily operation to the legal issues, flag state to classification regulations and support systems.
I have been working on ships for a number of years and have peaked in my position so this course will help me step up to the next level and proceed from there. As my strengths lay in Electrical Engineering and Cruise ships I have taken on the Marine Engineering module to improve my knowledge in this aspect which will make me an all round candidate for future positions.

Having just completed the recent Marine Surveying Course, I pass on my thanks to all concerned for an excellent course. The content, format and arrangements for the examination all worked well, (this from a student who travelled from the US for the final examinations). I found the content pitched at the right level for my needs and the constructive comments from the TMA authors to be most helpful. The course content has already proved invaluable in my present position as Assistant Safety/Quality Manager with a medium sized Tug company operating along the Eastern Seaboard and Gulf Coast of the US.
Whilst some of the modules contained knowledge with which I was fully familiar, others contained information that I had not, until that point, realized I did not know. The course was challenging and enjoyable and I would, without hesitation, recommend it to marine or shore staff wishing to broaden their knowledge and gain recognized certification.

The course for Diploma in Ship Agency helped me to explore and learn in great detail the importance of the agents' long term career in today's developed technological world. The well-structured modules amongst which, Law, Public relations, E-commerce and others, explored this complex career and role in depth and motivated me to look forward as a ship agent to fulfil this specialised and complex profession for the benefit of present and potential principals. Furthermore this course provided me with the benefit of studying whilst still in employment.
During the one year course I found great co-operation from all the tutors and Lloyds Maritime Academy's administration and I would like to thank them all for their kind co-operation. Whenever I asked questions or for further clarifications in the subject/matters, I always received a reply in short period of time.
The website www.informadistancelearning.com is very useful and for me it was of great opportunity for distance learning environment. It helped me to set the pace at which I learn when, where and for how long I wanted to study each module. A result of every assignment after a number of weeks from submission, gave me feedback on how I was progressing with the course.
My participation in the one day tutorial seminar held in the middle of the course in London, gave me the opportunity to meet other ship agents and discuss with each other issues related to this profession. Ship agents from all around the world attend the seminar and it was a great occasion for face-to-face interactions.
The course director was present at the seminar to guide us and answered our questions. Presentations from some of the course tutors were useful as they expanded our knowledge of the modules. It was an excellent opportunity to discuss points that I felt needed being addressed and also to mingle with other young and mature people in my profession.
We discussed this complex role/profession in depth and looked at the commercial, legal and financial point of view. Everyone's ideas and suggestions made the seminar more interesting.
I enjoyed this well designed course, which I completed with great success, and I fully propose this well-designed and tailor-made course for all ship agents and recommend every student's attendance and participation for the seminars.

The Course Hand Book when read for the first time gives an outline of what is expected of the Student. Upon completion of the Course and going through it again, one can recollect that every bit of what has been stated is true in full measure, executed to cater and suit the individual's need.
The Course is a wonderful platform for latest updated knowledge which makes an effort to transfer this gift of wealth cutting across universal barriers.
Meeting and interacting with other students across the Globe, comprising of different nationalities, pursuing various professional interests was an eye opener to look within one self.
The faculty and staff were always motivating and strictly professional, the Module Material provided, taught far more than many of the Law Text books put together to enlighten us in a short span of Time.
I definitely recommend this Course to my friends and Colleagues as the pattern adopted for the study makes one read many reference books, pick up research material and apply the principle in the Assessment papers where the assignment is a Practical day to day issue. In turn the core subject Matter is grasped, digested and assimilated.
I am grateful to the Academy and the University for providing me an opportunity to enrich my knowledge and for the exposure to new Horizons in Maritime Law.

The selection of the core modules covers a vast array of subjects that come into the scope of a marine surveyor. They bring in elements that one may not normally suspect a marine surveyor to be involved in, until that is, you have completed the course. The course also allows you to choose a key specialist subject that brings the course to a conclusion in the particular field relevant to the student.
The course is structured in a very flexible way that allows the student to work through the course at their own speed and also around their own personal requirements. The ability to draw on mentors, course tutors, on-line content and also an on-line discussion groups all help the student to work through the course with the confidence that support is always there.
The workshop days are invaluable and also bring together a wealth of marine knowledge where informal chat and ideas flow freely. They allow key players in the creation of the course and the marine industry to get the information across in a more personal way.
The course has given me a far greater understanding of the tasks of a marine surveyor and has helped me immensely in my current job as Marine Superintendent.
