Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management
IBCs 24th Annual Residential Summer School
Monday 30 June - Friday 4 July 2008
Christ's College, Cambridge
Overview
The combined drivers of global warming and security of energy supplies are bringing nuclear power back into energy decision making in many countries, with reactors building in the Finland, France, India and China and preliminary processes underway in the US, Canada, and the UK amongst others. However, the management of the existing and future arisings of radioactive waste (including waste from nuclear decommissioning) has become a major issue. This subject is of major importance to preserving the environment, managing the existing nuclear liabilities and maintaining the option and actuality of future nuclear generation.
As the first generation of nuclear plant comes to the end of its life, nuclear decommissioning is a key part of the nuclear fuel cycle, but it presents a number of issues for regulators, operators, the public and politicians. However, with many worldwide major projects underway, valuable experience has been gained allowing a good understanding of the strategic, planning and practical implementation aspects of the required tasks.
This Course brings together a number of international experts in the fields of decommissioning and radioactive waste management who will share their views and experiences at this residential course in the attractive environment of Christ's College, Cambridge. Their presentations are made in the style of tutorials rather than lectures, and an important aspect will be the ample opportunities given for discussion with the speakers and with other delegates both during the day and also during the social gatherings arranged each evening as part of this residential course. The course, suitable either as a refresher for those well established in the field or as a thorough introduction to newcomers, also includes workshops designed to give delegates an opportunity to explore decommissioning and waste management in depth.
