Dr Alan Mitcheson graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Leeds in 1973 and received industrial training at Rolls-Royce (Aero-Engine Division). He was awarded a scholarship from British Gas to undertake research at Leeds University under Professor Derek Bradley on gas explosion venting, for which he was awarded a Doctorate in 1977. He joined the practice of Dr J.H. Burgoyne & Partners that year, a firm of specialist consultants that specialise in matters relating to fire and explosion. He was made a Partner in 1983 and is the senior Partner in the Ilkley office, from where he has conducted over one thousand investigations into the causes of fires, explosions and mechanical failures around the world, on land, sea and air. These investigations have included a number of fires and explosions in offshore installations, including PIPER ALPHA. He is the Managing Director of the firm's sister company that provides consultancy advice on fire and explosion hazards and laboratory evaluation of hazardous materials. He has published on gas and dust explosions, incident investigation and case studies, including an explosion in an offshore installation.
